What is the guedel airway?

Date:2023-02-09
Guedel airway, also known as an oral pharyngeal airway, is a medical device used to maintain a patent airway in a patient who is unconscious or unable to maintain an adequate airway on their own. The device is named after its inventor, Auguste Guedel.

The Guedel airway is a curved, hollow tube made of plastic or rubber, with flanges at both ends that keep the airway in place. The device is inserted into the mouth, with the curved portion lying along the tongue and the flanges resting against the patient's cheek. This opens the airway by lifting the tongue away from the back of the throat and preventing it from blocking the airway.

Guedel airways come in a range of sizes to fit different age groups and are color-coded for quick identification. They are commonly used in emergency medical situations, such as cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, to provide a clear airway for artificial ventilation.

The Guedel airway is a simple, inexpensive, and effective tool for maintaining a patent airway in unconscious patients, and is an essential component of advanced airway management in emergency medical services. It should only be used by trained medical professionals, as improper use can lead to adverse effects such as choking, vomiting, or damage to the teeth or tongue.
